Happy Blood Moon Holi Pi Day!

I got up early this morning to see the Blood Moon eclipse, but I couldn’t see it. Apparently, the moon was only barely above the horizon. In the hilly area where I live, I couldn’t find a spot to see it. Oh well.

But I got this picture this morning from my youngest brother. He is celebrating a signature birthday this week by taking a trip to Vietnam and Cambodia with his wife. Today they arranged a sunrise tour of the ancient Cambodian city of Angkor Wat. So how fabulous is that picture? I’m taking that instead of my blood moon experience. Thanks, David!

But no worries about missing the Blood Moon eclipse. We have not one but TWO holidays to celebrate today. March 14 is always a special day for geeks, nerds, and homeschoolers (these categories OFTEN overlap). March 14, or 3/14, is the international celebration for Pi Day, a mathematical ratio that starts with 3.14. It is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. But it is a number that is infinite, so kind of a spiritual or universal thing. It’s a day that we geeks, nerds, and homeschoolers often celebrate. In my case, we are going to a Pi Party tonight thrown by one of our good friends.

This year, however, the day also coincides with Holi (pronounced like our English word Holy), the Hindu holiday celebrating Spring. As with most holidays, it involves food and drink. But this holiday is special in that Hindus celebrate by throwing pastel-colored powders at each other. It sounds like a fun!

So I’m starting the day meditating on my brother’s picture. Then I will make some special food. Then I will go to our Pi Party. In between, I will do my work. All along I will remember the wonders of this world outside of my jobs and my politics and my responsibilities and all that. I think it is cool that Holi is more kind of a visual/sensual/right-brained holiday and Pi Day is kind of a more mathetical/cerebral/left-brained one. Let’s spend the day celebrating the full range of human experience!
