Celebrate National Tell a Story Day with Cory Booker

Today, April 27, is National Tell a Story day. So I’ve been saving this video of New Jersey Senator Cory Booker telling a story. I love this video because:

  1. DUH! It’s my man, Cory Booker
  2. I’ve heard this story before, but he tells his version well
  3. PLUS, he actually gives the correct attribution to the quote he uses. Many people believe the quote was by Robert Kennedy (Senior, not Junior). Senator Kennedy did often use this quote in his speeches, but he gave credit to its original author, George Benard Shaw. Those who know me can tell you how much I dislike a quote being misattributed. So kudos to both Bobby and Cory for giving credit to whom credit is due.

Anyway, as I was looking for this video, what do I discover on YouTube but that Cory Booker and House Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries are having a livestream sit-in on the front steps of the Capitol building at this very moment (well, the moment that I’m writing this post). And just as I tuned in, Cory Booker starting telling another story about a historic meeting between African American Congressional Leaders (including the South Carolina Senator Clyburn, the late Texas congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, Georgia Senator Rev. Raphael Warnock, and the like) with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Anyway, if you want to try catching his storytelling live, here is the livestream: https://www.youtube.com/live/5ceR90lihX8?si=F4Y3ShoizABPMawz

Apparently they’ve been at it for about 9 hours so far (as of 3:45 PM today). But this time Cory gets to sit down and eat and drink and wear a track suit, so it’s much more comfortable than he was during his record-breaking non-filibuster at the beginning of the month.

So I’m going to end this post and go back and listening to some more storytelling on the steps of the Capitol on this beautiful Sunday. Enjoy!
