Some Buddhist traditions believe December 8 is the day that former prince turned spiritual seeker, Siddhartha Gautama, achieved enlightenment (called “bodhi” in Sanskrit) and escaped the cycle of life and death that creates human suffering. He then became the Buddha, or the Enlightened One. While he could have left the physical plane to exist in personal nirvana, he chose to remain in the world for a while to teach others how to do the same. In doing so, he became the first of what Buddhists believe is a long line of bodhisattvas. A bodhisattva is someone who delays nirvana out of compassion to assist others along this path to transcend human limitations.
So today’s song honors this month’s holiday within Buddhism, one of the most accepting of our world religions. Now, this song many not sound like you would expect a Buddhist song to sound. But if there is any religion that has changed, evolved, and adapted to different cultures, it is probably Buddhism. And even if you aren’t a Buddhist, the song has wonderful advice about how to deal with the divisive and antagonistic times we find ourselves in these days.
I hope you find it motivational
