I attended the No Kings rally this past Saturday in Cary, and it was wonderful. But also raised some questions for me. I’ve been working on a post about it but it is taking longer than I thought to figure out what I want to say. These are complex times and complex issues and so I’m taking the time I need to express what I am thinking about the entire experience.
However, it is MONDAY, so that means we need a Motivational Monday Music post. I had thought about this post prior to the rally and had picked a song for today. However, my choice was blown away by a song that the musician for my spiritual center, The Triangle Center for Spiritual Living (https://trianglecsl.org), chose for our service yesterday. That musician is Mr. Sandy Hemenway, a singer/piano player/songwriter who is such a wonderful voice for the New Thought spiritual community. You can check him out at: https://www.reverbnation.com/sandyhemenway. If you don’t know him, I recommend that you listen to (and buy) his many wonderful original songs.
And like me today, he performed a different song for yesterday’s service then he had planned. I suppose he was inspired for the switch by the words of our minister, the Reverend Dusty Rippelmeyer. So perhaps the inspiration for this week’s song is due to her. But I realized, if I had one message about what I think I am trying to communicate by participating in these No King rallies….well, this song communicates it the best.
Since I didn’t have Sandy’s version of the song, I had to figure out what video I would use. There are MANY. I ended up choosing this one, which is not traditional. But the singer, besides being FANTASTIC, played one of our iconic American heroes in a movie. And it appears to be in honor of an American President who had a radically different approach to citizenship than others who had come before. All of our Presidents have had issues, because we are all humans who make mistakes. But some, in my opinion, lifted us up and encouraged us to connect with and support each other, while others have focused on negativity and attempted to divide us. I believe in possibility and unity. So this is the version of the song I chose.
One last thing I would say is that our theme at TCSL this past Sunday was about being a Possibilitarian. The key is to believe our dreams or goals are possible. If we say we want X, but believe X is impossible, we are just wasting our time and energy. I truly believe our democracy will be stronger and better after all this, although I don’t know how and what things will look like.
It reminds me of this quote from Joel A. Barker from his 1992 book, Future Edge. In it, he states:
“Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world.”
I hope this song supports you in changing the world!
