For many people, 2016 was a difficult, disheartening, even depressing year.  And for many, it feels like things have only gone downhill since then.  We can look at many events in our world and think that things are going in a negative direction.

But Joseph Campbell had some words of wisdom about this for us.  He said:
“The world is perfect. It’s a mess. It has always been a mess. We are not going to change it. Our job is to straighten out our own lives.”

So what you see in the world depends what you are looking for.  You look for bad, you find bad.  You look for good, you’ll find good.  Yes, there were horribly divisive political conflicts, both in the US and abroad.  There were wars and acts of terrorism and other kinds of violence.  Both private individuals and political figures demonstrated racism, sexism, and prejudice based on faith, country of origin, and gender orientation.

But there was plenty of good as well.  There were beautiful sunsets and night skies shining with stars.  There were vacations and holidays and just plain old get-togethers with friends and family.  Families’ circles of love expanded through marriages, births of beloved children, or the addition of cute puppies to the clan.

What I believe is that what we focus on increases.  The more we think about our fears and our disappointments, the more fearful and depressed we become.  So in this blog, we will highlight the things that make us feel good.  We will look for signs that things are getting better, not worse.  We will feature acts of kindness and connection and love.  We will remind each other of all the things we have to feel grateful for.  We will talk about what makes us laugh, what makes us love, what makes us feel alive.
