One of the great traditions of Broadway is the annual fundraiser for the MCC Theater (an off-Broadway theater focused on producing original works by up-and-coming playwrights) known as “Miscast.” Now in its 20th year, the show presents the best and the brightest of Broadway stars performing songs from shows they would NEVER be actually cast in.
Of course, tickets to the show are hot, and expensive, commodities. But due to, yes, once again, the coronavirus, Miscast 2020 is going virtual. So we mere mortals living far away from Manhattan can actually watch the show live for FREE (although they are requesting donations to keep their doors open once we can have live theater again).
The 90-minute show starts at 8:00 Eastern time (join at 7:45 if you want to see their pre-show) on Sunday, September 13 on the MCC You Tube channel at: https://www.youtube.com/user/mcctheater
Here is the trailer for the event:
The numbers to be preformed are always top secret, but the line-up is stellar, including The Lion King‘s Heather Headley, Harvey Fierstein and the original Hairspray cast, Hello Dolly‘s Beanie Feldstein, Carousel‘s Joshua Henry, and Hamilton’s Leslie Odom, Jr. and Phillipa Soo.
It is sure to be a night of fun, surprises, and incredible talent in ways you’ve never seen before. For me, having the opportunity to see it live via computer is one of the silver linings of this whole “sheltering at home” business.
To whet your appetite, copy link below into your browser to see a video of one of my favorite Miscast performances from an earlier show. It features Jonathan Groff (King George in Hamilton) who is an incredible actor and an amazing singer, but not the strongest dancer, at least by Broadway standards (although he can dance rings around me). Miscast let his dance his little heart out on a show-stopping number from a role for which he would NEVER be cast. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
