Well, it’s been another one of those weeks, hasn’t it? I’m sure we could all use something to brighten up our weekend. Don’t you think an hour and a half of Latinx Broadway performances would do the trick?
A free show on YouTube called Viva Broadway: Hear Our Voices pays tribute to the vibrant contribution of Latinx artists to American musical theater. It includes performances by such luminaries as Lucie Arnaz, Gloria Estefan, John Leguizamo, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Luis Miranda, Chita Rivera and Thalía. It will present a song from members of the original cast of In the Heights, as well as selections from Broadway-bound musicals and new works including John Leguizamo’s Kiss My Aztec; Arrabal; Passing Through; and a look at the first Spanish language production of A Chorus Line.
The video will only be available from October 1 through October 5 at 8:00 PM Eastern time. It is free, but is designed as a fundraiser for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, which provides support to families battling HIV/AIDS and other critical illnesses, and Broadway Bridges, which is a program to allow every 10th grader in New York City public schools to attend a Broadway show (once they start up again). Those are two great causes, and all donations are matched by some generous philanthropists. So if all this great Latinx music doesn’t lift your spirits, then supporting the arts and provided desperately-needed medical assistance to others certainly will!
