What Broadway musical is more appropriate to watch this weekend than Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic Jesus Christ Superstar? Fortunately, you have the opportunity to watch two different versions–via stay-at-home technology, of course–this weekend for free.
Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, one of the best contemporary Broadway writers/composers/producers around, is doing his part to alleviate the “sheltering at home” boredom by running a series of his musicals online for free. The series, called “The Shows Must Go On,” makes available a film of a full-length Webber musical each Friday to watch for free! The shows will be available from Friday 2 p.m. ET/11 a.m. PT for 48 hours on Webber’s YouTube channel at: https://www.youtube.com/theshowsmustgoon
The series started last week with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Raincoat, and continues this weekend with a 2012 film of Jesus Christ Superstar, starring Ben Forster as Jesus, former Spice Girl Melanie C as Mary Magdalene, and Tim Minchin as Judas. You can get a taste for the performance below:
However, if you want to wait until Easter night (Sunday, April 12, 7PM Eastern/6 Central Time) to watch this musical, NBC will be re-broadcasting its 2018 version of Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert. In this production, John Legend plays Jesus, Sara Bareilles as Mary Magdalene, and Hamilton’s Broadway Aaron Burr actor, Brandon Victor Dixon as…you guessed it, Judas.
Here is a first look video about the original showing of this production:
So if you are in the mood to see this non-traditional approach to the story of Jesus, you have two ways to see if for free this weekend.
It’s not Broadway, but if you are looking for more traditional Easter music, I can also recommend an online concert entitled Music for Hope LIVE by renowned Italian opera singer Andrea Bocelli. The show will be broadcast from the beautiful, but empty, Duoma cathedral of Milan in the heart of Italy, one of the countries that has been hit the hardest by COVID-19 and thus under intensive lock-down. Bocelli hopes the concert will send a message of love, healing, and hope, not only to his native country, but to the world. Tune in at 1 PM Eastern time/10 AM Pacific time via his YouTube channel at: https://AndreaBocelli.lnk.to/LiveFrom…
Watch below for a preview of that concert:
UPDATE: My son and I watched Bocelli’s Music for Hope live concert this afternoon, and it was lovely. You can watch the video version below:
