Tomorrow (Saturday, April 18) would have been the Earth Day Teach-in on “Reducing Your Carbon Foodprint” at our local Farmers Market (Cary Downtown Farmers Market). Due to the Coronavirus, that has been postponed until…we don’t know–until it is safe to do it. But we are committed to doing it, because it’s not really about Earth Day, but about making different choices around our eating that are less damaging to our global environment.
HOWEVER, if I can’t be doing that tomorrow, I will be checking out the big activity sponsored by Global Citizen, an international non-profit that defines itself as “a movement of engaged citizens who are using their collective voice to end extreme poverty by 2030.” That activity is a global special, curated in collaboration with Lady Gaga, entitled One World Together At Home. It is a media event, combining international stars in music and entertainment, to bring the people of the world together in celebration and support of health care workers and the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for the World Health Organization (WHO).
The music starts at 2:00 PM Eastern time, but the biggest stars (I guess) will be showing up between 8:00-10:00 PM Eastern time (again, Saturday, April 18). In the US, it will be broadcast on the three big TV stations (ABC, CBS, and NBC) along with Facebook Live and Youtube and various other media stations; other countries appear to have their major media broadcasting it as well. There are so many stars appearing, but here is the official listing of the biggest names:
The broadcast of One World: Together At Home will include appearances by: Amy Poehler, Andrea Bocelli, Awkwafina, Billie Eilish, Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day, Burna Boy, Camila Cabello, Céline Dion, Chris Martin, David Beckham, Eddie Vedder, Ellen DeGeneres, Elton John, FINNEAS, Idris and Sabrina Elba, J Balvin, Jennifer Lopez, John Legend, Kacey Musgraves, Keith Urban, Kerry Washington, Lady Gaga, Lang Lang, Lizzo, LL COOL J, Lupita Nyong’o, Maluma, Oprah Winfrey, Paul McCartney, Pharrell Williams, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, the Rolling Stones, Sam Smith, Shah Rukh Khan, Shawn Mendes, Stevie Wonder, Taylor Swift, and Usher.
So, whatever your musical taste is, there should be something that appeals to you. I mostly just love the concept–that we are connecting with each other all over the world just by all staying home. With this pandemic, it is something we do not just for ourselves, not just for our community, not just for our country, but for the whole world…because with this disease, none of us are safe until all of us are healthy.
So I’ll be tuning in, and will be connecting with the presumably millions of others across the world who will be doing so as well.
Wow, thanks Carol!
